Mel Maier is the Executive Director of APCO International and serves and supports the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Executive Council; oversees the Public Safety Foundation of America; partners with executive leadership to develop strategic plans; evaluates and advises on the impact of long-range planning, the introduction of new programs and strategies, and regulatory and legislative action. As the former Chief Technology Officer, Mel represented APCO’s position on matters related to the Emergency Communications Center, including the technical, operational, and administrative aspects of emergency communications voice and data systems. He oversaw the effectiveness of technology resources within APCO International and leads all technical components related to Next Generation 9-1-1, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies. Before joining APCO, he had more than 30 years of experience in public safety, the last 12 years as a Captain with the Oakland County, MI, Sheriff’s Office and as the 911 Director of the multi-agency dispatch center, directing the activities of the Emergency Communications and Operations Division. Mel has served on both SAFECOM and the FirstNet PSAC Executive Committees. He currently leads the Public Safety Next Generation 9-1-1 Coalition advocating for a federal NG9-1-1 grant program.
