Emily Zavala (she/her/ella) is a 4th year Ph.D. student at Claremont Graduate University in the Positive Organizational Psychology program and received her B.A. in Psychology from California Lutheran University. Her research is focused on increasing awareness about the consequences of working as a public safety telecommunicator (i.e., 9-1-1 operator and police dispatcher). She is passionate about developing programs, interventions and initiatives that help mitigate the impact of those consequences on employee well-being. In addition, she co-authored a book chapter titled, "Promoting Optimal Well-Being Among Law Enforecment Employees." Emily spent 16 years with the Los Angeles Police Department as a public safety telecommunicator and understands firsthand the cost of working in a 9-1-1 profession. Currently, she works full-time for the City of Los Angeles as a Management Assistant for the City Administrative Officer in the Equity, Performance Management, and Innovation group. She plays a vital role in researching and providing recommendations to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into every fabric of the City. Recently, she has been part of the discussions surrounding the creation of an unarmed crisis response for Los Angeles that shifts responsibility for certain calls away from police to reduce altercations between police and vulnerable communities. Over the years, Emily has come to appreciate the value of scientific inquiry to advance knowledge and has engaged in a variety of research, always trying to push the scope of her vision.
