In the wake of Hurricane Ian in south Florida in 2022, emergency communications centers (ECC) faced many challenges. ECCs experienced technical, operational, and personnel related challenges as they supported the response to this Category 4 hurricane. Listen as ECC personnel discuss preparations prior to the hurricane’s arrival, as well as some of the unique impacts to critical communications systems as the hurricane moved through the multi-county region.

Learning Objectives:

Understand some of the communications challenges faced by ECCs in southwest Florida as a major hurricane impacted the region, how they worked through them, and what changes they are considering to enhance preparedness for future incidents.
Learn about the FirstNet resources that were deployed for Hurricane Ian and how they were used to support critical communications for ECCs and response operations.
Learn about the many different types of FirstNet resources that are available to support communications during disaster incidents such as a hurricane or other major weather events.
