Deputy Director - Mayor's Office of Domestic & Community Violence Prevention
City of Rockford
Rockford, Illinois
As a social work intern in college, Andrea Carlson was tasked with answering a 24-hour crisis hotline for domestic and sexual assault survivors in rural Illinois. The many stories of strength and survival she heard from those survivors led to her nearly three decades of work in supporting survivors of intimate partner violence and their children, as well as helping to improve community and systems responses to this issue. It is those voices that continue to motivate and guide her work.
In response to the widespread impact of domestic violence on every community member and system, Andrea takes every opportunity to talk about this issue with the goal of helping others identify ways to support survivors and be part of an improved community response to domestic violence. She has facilitated 40-hour domestic violence training courses, which are required for Illinoisans to work directly with domestic violence survivors, and provided training to community members, youth, various professional and social groups, paramedics, medical staff and students, and members of the criminal justice system, including law enforcement officers, 911 Telecommunicators and court staff.
Although she has worked at the state and county levels, she is honored to be working for the City of Rockford, where she is helping to make her hometown a survivor-centered community.
